Many sellers on Bol.com optimize Sponsored Products for one metric: return on ad spend (ROAS). A higher ROAS sounds great — more advertising-attributed revenue for every euro spent. But a high ROAS does not necessarily mean your business is growing profitably.
On Bol.com, optimize for contribution, organic visibility, and TACoS — not ROAS alone.
To make better advertising decisions, look beyond ROAS at profitability, organic ranking, and TACoS (total advertising cost of sales).
1. Why a high ROAS can be misleading
Imagine you sell pet food on Bol.com and run two campaigns:
| Campaign A | Campaign B | |
|---|---|---|
| Target | Your own brand name | Generic "dog food" searches |
| Ad spend | €100 | €100 |
| Ad-attributed sales | €1,000 | €400 |
| ROAS | 10x | 4x |
Based on ROAS alone, Campaign A looks much better.
Customers searching for your brand often already know your products. Some might have purchased without an ad. Campaign B reaches shoppers who may not know your brand yet — ads can create genuinely new demand and visibility.
The campaign with the highest ROAS is not necessarily the campaign creating the most incremental sales. Evaluate branded and generic campaigns separately.
2. Profitability: Are your advertising sales actually making money?
Revenue is not profit. Every Bol.com sale carries:
- Product costs (COGS)
- Bol.com commissions
- Fulfillment and shipping
- Expected returns
- Advertising spend
| Per product sold | Amount |
|---|---|
| Selling price (excluding VAT) | €30 |
| Product cost | −€10 |
| Bol.com commission | −€5 |
| Fulfillment and other costs | −€5 |
| Profit before advertising | €10 |
This SKU has €10 in contribution before ads. Spend €6 on advertising for one incremental sale → €4 left after ads. Spend €12 → that sale loses €2.
Bids and budgets should follow product-level economics. A 40% margin before ads can afford different bids than a 10% margin.
The goal is not the cheapest advertising. It is profitable advertising. Not every ad-attributed sale is incremental — estimate how many orders would have happened without ads when you judge campaign profit impact.
3. Organic ranking: Advertising can support future sales
Advertising drives immediate orders and can support sales velocity, new customers, and organic visibility on Bol.com.
You launch a new product with limited history. Sponsored Products bring traffic; ROAS may look weak for weeks. If ads drive additional sales, you build history and may compete better in organic search. Over time, more sales should come without paying for every click.
Advertising does not guarantee ranking. Relevance, conversion, price, availability, and product performance still matter.
What to monitor on important keywords:
- Organic ranking position
- Total product sales
- Advertising-attributed sales
- Organic sales (estimated where needed)
If you move from position 25 to 5 on a core term while organic sales rise, growth strategy may be working. That does not prove ads caused the lift — but it is a fuller picture than ROAS alone.
4. TACoS: Are ads helping grow your overall business?
ROAS uses only ad-attributed sales. TACoS compares advertising spend to all sales, including organic:
TACoS = Advertising spend ÷ Total sales × 100%
| Month 1 | Month 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising spend | €1,000 | €1,500 |
| Ad-attributed sales | €4,000 | €5,000 |
| Total sales | €6,000 | €12,000 |
| ROAS | 4.0x | 3.3x |
| TACoS | 16.7% | 12.5% |
Month 2 ROAS falls (4.0x → 3.3x). ROAS-only optimization says performance worsened.
In context: total sales doubled, ad spend rose 50%, TACoS improved from 16.7% to 12.5%. You may be growing revenue more efficiently relative to ad investment — if incremental sales are profitable.
Declining ROAS with improving TACoS can be a positive signal. TACoS is not a profit metric; organic growth unrelated to ads can also lower it. Pair TACoS with contribution margin and sales trends.
5. How to make better Bol.com advertising decisions
Instead of asking only "How do we improve ROAS?", use three questions:
| Question | Metric to monitor | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Are we making money? | Contribution after ads | Protects profitability |
| Are we becoming more visible? | Organic keyword ranking | Tracks potential long-term growth |
| Are we growing efficiently? | TACoS | Links ad spend to total sales |
Scenario A: High ROAS, but no growth
Branded campaigns show 10x ROAS; total sales are flat. You may be paying for customers who would buy organically.
What to do: Test reducing branded spend. Shift budget toward relevant generic terms and new-customer acquisition when economics allow.
Scenario B: Lower ROAS, but growing sales and ranking
Generic campaigns show 3x ROAS; total sales and organic visibility rise.
What to do: Keep investing when contribution and evidence support it. Watch contribution, ranking, and TACoS — do not cut bids only to lift ROAS.
Scenario C: Strong ROAS, but negative profit
5x ROAS, but fulfillment and low margin erase contribution.
What to do: Fix product economics, pricing, and bids before scaling.
6. The right goal: Profitable total sales growth
ROAS and ACoS help you judge attributed revenue efficiency. They should not be the entire strategy.
A strong Bol.com advertising approach connects:
- Profitability — sustainable contribution after ad cost.
- Organic growth — visibility and sales beyond paid clicks.
- TACoS — ad spend efficiency relative to total revenue.
The best campaign is not always the highest ROAS. It is the one that contributes most to profitable, sustainable growth.
